Hillcrest resident (and Scripps Institution of Oceanography assistant professor) Dr. P.E. Robbins was interviewed Monday on KUSI News about a recent ocean survey showing rapid warming in the north Pacific. Dr. Robbins was on board the RV Melville for part of the summer-long ocean research cruise crossing the mid-latitude ocean from Yokohama Japan to San Diego. The Meville arrived at her port in San Diego last Friday after completing an historic 678 day circumnavigation of the globe.
“We were measuring very basic observations of the temperature of the water as it is now and comparing that to temperatures measured on past expeditions like this and found, not surprisingly really, the North Pacific Ocean is warming up, like all the other oceans are, in response to climate change and global warming.”
