Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at the Pride festival and signed the NO on 301 University petition. The to-scale diorama is now on display at Column One (the kewl fountain and statuary store at 401 University). Please drop by the next time in you’re in the neighborhood and see in advance what a 12-story building will look like at that corner. Notice, too, how the 5 westbound lanes of University cross Fifth and become 3 lanes. Then at the corner where this building has been proposed, University Avenue is reduced to 2 lanes until it merges with Washington Street a dozen blocks to the west. Is this the best location for a 12-story building? Current parking will be reduced by about 60 spaces, but the new building will have 121 public spots available (gain 61). 301 University will add 96 new condominums to Hillcrest. Each with one parking place.
Are 61 parking places worth the negative impact this project will create?
Visit 301support.org or savehillcrest.com to educate yourself on this project. Some folks think that this is a ‘done deal.’ It’s not. City Council will vote on this development Tuesday afternoon, September 12 at 2pm. Go to 12th floor of City Hall and speak out for Hillcrest. District 2 Councilwoman Toni Atkins says she has not yet made up her mind on 301 University. Contact each San Diego City councilmember and let them know what you think.
