Public wants to ban cars from Cabrillo Bridge

Hundreds filled the Balboa Park Club on Saturday morning, January 8, 2011 to discuss plans for removing cars from Plaza de Panama and building a bypass from the Cabrillo Bridge to a parking garage

100s showed up yesterday morning as the Balboa Park Committee held a special session to discuss the proposed “Plaza de Panama, Circulation & Parking Structure Project Park Reclamation Design”. (Mayor Jerry Sanders and Dr. Irwin Jacobs plan to add a bypass off the historic Cabrillo Bridge through the Alcazar Garden parking lot (valet zone) to a new parking structure directly behind the Organ Pavilion for a cost of $42 million.)

The vast number attending Saturday’s 3-hour workshop opposed the bridge bypass and garage in the heart of the park — instead favoring the construction of a parking lot at Inspiration Point. Several people also voiced the need for a “robust tram system” perhaps financed by paid parking at the zoo and closing the bridge to all carsSOHOand the greater San Diego preservation community strongly oppose the current plans for many reasons, not the least being that is would not be compatible with the Secrertary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Attend Tuesday’s HTC meeting (see above) to learn more.
