“I will work very hard to represent all of the people, including Mr. Stillwell. He follows his beliefs and he has a right to. My mother told me long ago, be nice to everyone you meet, and I believe she was right.”
Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins in response to Don Stillwell, a frequent speaker at council meetings, criticizing her appointment (by colleagues on the recommendation of Mayor Dick Murphy). Murphy and several councilmembers defended their choice, with Inzunza adding that Stillwell’s objection was “sick” and “hurtful.”
“This really is a good day for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community,” said Atkins, who is a lesbian.
