How will our new district be divided?
The city’s redistricting committee held a meeting in the Santa Fe Room of the Balboa Park Club this morning. More than 60 residents from all over town shared their opinions on how the city should be divided into nine districts, but only one person from Uptown stood up to share her thoughts — that Uptown should not be divided (as it is currently with District 2 and 3).
Several representatives from Asian Pacific American Coalition (APAC) made a group presentation supporting their proposed map to carve out a ninth council district providing representation that promote and provide for their culture. 21 other speakers represented other neighborhoods.
The Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) is working to create mapping options with an independent group Redistricting California. Come to the next HTC meeting on Tuesday, May 10 to share your thoughts.
Should the shape of District 3 remain the same (the “gay” district) with Hillcrest on the west and City Heights on the east…or should our next district represent the older neighborhoods circling Balboa Park? (Bankers Hill and Mission Hills are currently in District 2.) The redistricting committe wants your input!!!
The next meeting of the redistricting committee will convene in District 3 on Monday, May 2 at the Regional Transportation Center Showroom, 4001 El Cajon Boulevard. The commission will reconvene again on May 4 in Point Loma and hold their regular meeting downtown at city hall on Thursday, May 5 in council chambers.
