This week will mark a Hillcrest milestone as Mike Wright & Alan Bilmes, owners of City Delicatessen, will put out the “closed” sign for a final time. Located in the heart of Uptown at Sixth & University, City Deli has served the community well for over 29 years. The bright and colorful corner with its checkerboard trim and distinctive fruit-topped frieze have made this restaurant a neighborhood landmark. The eatery has been a popular meeting place for business people, friends and families since 1984.
Over the decades City Deli has donated many cakes to dozens of groups including the Hillcrest Town Council, Hillcrest History Guild, Hillcrest Business Association and, in the early days of the Clean T.E.A.M., Mike and Alan gave cookies to each volunteer who picked-up trash on Hillcrest sidewalks and gutters two Sundays each month (for years!).
This Tuesday, July 30 from 5:45-7:15pm please stop by the deli to reminisce and bid a fond farewell and well-deserved retirement to Mike and Alan. Join San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria and representatives from State Senator Marty Block and Assemblymember Toni Atkins offices as they acknowledge the hard work and generosity that City Deli has shared over their decades in the neighborhood.
