SD’s biggest parade kicks off from University Avenue (at Normal) today at 11am with a mile-long route (map) lined with 150,000+ spectators. Over 300 entries will represent the LGBT community’s diversity. The parade proceeds west to Sixth before turning south toward Balboa Park, site of the 2-day festival.
Tip: The parade staging area is along Normal Street. Arrive mid-morning and bring your camera!
Parking — Get here early! If you’re going to make a day of it and attend the festival, leave your vehicle near Marston Point. Walk back to your spot along the parade route while you’re fresh, and it’s still cool. Bring folding chairs to stake out your viewing area, then breakfast at a neighborhood eatery.
Tip: You may also park near the old Navy Hospital east of Park Boulevard in Balboa Park where (from 7-11am) free shuttles will transport you to the Hillcrest staging area. Return trips wil run until 2pm.
Viewing —Sixth Avenue (south of Robinson) is usually not as packed as the rest of the route. Do you want to stand for three hours? If not, stake out a piece of curb with a blanket. New in 2007: Additional reviewing stands will be located throughout the route. Don’t forget sunscreen, water and money.
Tip: At the end of the parade follow the masses to the festival grounds. That blankie will come in handy on the grassy slopes. Or you may want to postpone the festival ‘til Sunday when it’s not as crowded.
