Comments from Tom Mullaney with Friends of San Diego re: the Hillcrest Corridor Mobility Study and community input from yesterday’s workshop at St. Paul’s Cathedral: (1) This Hillcrest transportation study is sounding an alarm with residents. SD must think long and hard about closing four north-south vehicle lanes out of the ten lanes on Fourth, Fifth and Sixth avenues. Consultant’s figures show that vehicle traffic would be impeded, yet there would be little offsetting benefit for mass transit. (2) Adding curb pop-outs at 66 intersections would be excessive. We need traffic engineering, not fads. (3) The worst idea is closing two lanes on Sixth Avenue, with diagonal parking along Balboa Park. This would slow traffic to a near standstill for commuters and parkgoers.
