Celebrating Hillcrest’s First One Hundred Years

Laura Jane leading Happy Birthday song to Hillcrest, August 2, 2007 at noonThe SD Women’s Drum Circle began the beat yesterday morning as folks gathered under the Hillcrest sign for a proclaimation by Councilwoman Toni Atkins, a birthday song led by Laura Jane and a piece from a huge chocolate cake as Hillcrest celebrated the exact date 100 years ago when the “Hillcrest” Company’s tract office was first opened by William Wesley Whitson in what was then known as “University Heights.” Five of Whitson’s descendants joined the community at yesterday’s midday celebration of the Hillcrest Centennial.

The evening’s neighborhood social at Joyce Beers Community Center was well attended as an incredible array of food was shared. The community donated everything — big thanks to Crest Cafe, City Deli, Baja Betty’s, T Deli, Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, Ralphs, Aladdin, Terra Restaurant, Chipotle and First Future Credit Union for their cash donation.

Congratulations to Carol Kerr (and her team) for winning the Grand Prize in the Scavenger Quest. She/they scored 99%. These girls really outdid themselves. Thanks to everyone that participated.

Happy birthday, Hillcrest. (We even received a mention in Diane Bell’s U-T column.)
Robbie, Amy, Alyssa, Gloria & Bob Whitson
