Approval for over 100 new parking spots in Uptown has been obtained by the Uptown Community Parking District (UCPD) in the last two years. These new spots have been obtained by a variety of optimization techniques, such as reduction of red-curb parking, conversion to angled parking, & restoration of unneeded curb-cuts.
There are 14 members on the UCPD board with three-year terms, seven representing Hillcrest — five business seats with two held by residents (election for one residential seat and two business seats will be held). The Bankers Hill neighborhood has five seats at the table with three held by businesses and two by residents (one of the business seats will be replaced at the August 12 UCPD meeting). Hillcrest’s residential seat will be chosen by the Hillcrest Town Council with nominations and election at its August 13 meeting.
The UCPD is tasked with recommending to the City of San Diego how to spend a percentage of the parking meter revenue generated in Uptown. Have you noticed the free trolley service in Hillcrest on Thursdays-Sundays? That is an effort of the Hillcrest parking commitee who also has developed a Parking-Ap and installed rainbow-colored bike racks near Richmond and University.
The Board Members for the Uptown Community Parking District are expected to attend monthly meetings held the second Monday at 5pm) and their appropriate neighborhood parking meeting (Bankers Hill meets on the first Mondays and Hillcrest meets the fourth Wednesdays, both at 5pm).The Uptown parking boards also includes Mission Hills and International Restaurant Row (aka Five Points). Board members need no special qualifications, only a desire to improve Uptown’s parking situation. Please consider becoming involved.
